An interesting discussion about creating value from short film-making took place at Metro Kino Haus, 27th May. The speakers included Mike Plante (Senior Programmer, Sundance Film Festival), Marie-Elaine Riou, (Festival Director, Regard Festival, Saguenay, Canada); Jessica Jane Howard (Sales & Acquisitions, Short Shorts Festival, Japan), and Patrick Vollrath, director of Everything Will Be OK, which won at VIS last year and was this year nominated for shorts Oscar. The talk was moderated by Wouter Jansen, distributor at Some Shorts from the Netherlands.

Humanity has been making up rules to define and even organize its existence for thousands of years. Since then, we’ve made ourselves believe one’s entity is defined by the ambiguous parameters of either jus sanguinis (‘right of blood’) or jus soli (‘right of the soil’)that is, the nationality attributed to the citizen directly from birth through one or both parents or the right to citizenship to anyone born in the territory. Hitherto we’ve lived somewhat “peacefully”, guilt-free of the system and the politics that surround it, as well as the art world contemplating it.
